The Charles L. Schepens, M.D., Fund
During his long and distinguished career, Charles Schepens, M.D., revolutionized the practice of ophthalmology worldwide. He was a brilliant innovator of new surgical techniques and instrumentation, and he was a devoted teacher and mentor. He trained many of the first generation leaders in retinal subspecialties and is rightfully known as:"Father of Modern Retinal Surgery."
In 1950, Dr. Schepens founded the Retina Eye Institute, which later became the Schepens Eye Institute, a preeminent institute for the investigation of retinal eye disease. The Mass. Eye and Ear and Schepens Eye Research Institute partnership began in 1991, and two decades later, in 2011, we officially joined forces to create the largest, most comprehensive eye research center in the world.
The Charles L. Schepens, M.D. Fund is part of the Bold Science. Life-Changing Cures. Campaign. The purpose of this fund is to honor the legacy of Dr. Schepens by raising an endowment that will create an annual income to further the work he cared most deeply about: teaching, improving patient care and finding cures for blindness.
