Overview

Vocal fold nodules are like callouses on the vocal folds. They grow when the vocal folds vibrate too hard against one another and are most often associated with chronic voice strain.

5Common Symptoms

  • Hoarseness
  • Breathiness
  • A rough, scratch voice
  • Feeling like you have a "lump in your throat"
  • Neck pain

Diagnosis and Treatment

The first line of treatment for vocal fold nodules is voice therapy. The goal is to minimize trauma to the vocal folds when speaking. In most cases the nodules respond well to therapy alone. If therapy doesn’t improve the nodules, surgical intervention may be an option.
