8Common Symptoms

  • Sore throat
  • Red, swollen tonsils
  • White or yellow patches on the tonsils
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Stomach pain
  • Headache

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is based on a physical examination of the throat in addition to a throat culture that is sent to a laboratory to identify the cause of the infection. Mild cases of tonsillitis do not need treatment. However, more severe cases typically require antibiotics.

If you or your child is repeatedly suffering from strep, talk to a specialist about treatment options, such as long-term antibiotics or surgery. Tonsillectomies can be an effective way to treat children for recurrent strep.
