Overview
Most skin cancers occur on the head and neck area, as these areas are most frequently exposed to sunlight. Other possible factors can include radiation, trauma, arsenic exposure, immunosuppressants, skin diseases, and certain chemicals.
3Common Symptoms
- An unusual skin growth or sore that doesn't go away
- Pale patch of skin or a waxy translucent bump
- Changes in the size, shape or color of an existing spot
Diagnosis and Treatment
Once a suspicious area appears, your doctor may wish to sample it by doing a biopsy to determine what it is. This will help determine which method or therapy would be most successful for treating it. The standard treatment methods include:
- Topical cream
- Cryo-surgery (freezing the tumor)
- Electrodesiccation and curettage (burning the tumor with an electric needle)
- Radiation therapy
- Surgery
- Mohs surgery
- Photodynamic therapy (PDT)
