Dr. Matthew Gardiner serves as Director of the Ophthalmology Emergency, Consult, and Hospitalist Services and is a member of the Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Cataract Consultation Service at Mass Eye and Ear, where he provides a wide range of eye care from routine exams to management of complex ophthalmic diseases. His primary interests are anterior segment surgery and emergency ophthalmology.

Dr. Gardiner earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He then completed two residencies-one in internal medicine and another in ophthalmology-before completing a fellowship in anterior segment disease at Mass Eye and Ear.

As a clinician educator, Dr. Gardiner teaches and trains residents and medical students, both in outpatient clinics and in the operating room. Notably, he has been selected twice as Teacher of the Year-an honor bestowed to him by ophthalmology residents, reflecting his outstanding efforts in medical education. He also speaks nationally about the importance of eye protection and the repair of eye injuries, and he has published several book chapters, including one entitled "Corneal and Scleral Lacerations."
