A full-time member of the Glaucoma Service, Dr. van Zyl specializes in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataracts. She sees patients at two Boston locations—Mass. Eye and Ear's main campus on Charles Street and Mass. Eye and Ear Longwood (800 Huntington Avenue).

As the recipient of the NIH K12 clinician scientist career development award, she studies molecular and genetic characteristics that may increase a person's risk of developing glaucoma. Using advanced genomic sequencing technology, Dr. van Zyl works closely with researchers at Mass General Hospital, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, and Harvard Department of Molecular and Cellular biology to study the differences between the cells in healthy and unhealthy (glaucomatous) ocular tissues. She is particularly interested in the trabecular meshwork, a complex structure responsible for regulating pressure inside the eye, often dysfunctional in patients with glaucoma.

Clinical Interests

Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), including iStent, Kahook Dual Blade, ab interno canaloplasty (ABiC), endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation (ECP), and Xen Gel stent

Research Interests

Steroid-induced glaucoma, Pseudoexfoliation, Trabecular meshwork dysfunction
