Surgical Excision

Surgical excision refers to a procedure in which tissue is removed surgically and sent for histologic analysis. Here the process of preparing the tissue for the microscope takes several days. It can be used for diagnostic and/or therapeutic purposes. If a biopsy has already been performed and the diagnosis is known, the excision is performed with the goal of removing any remaining lesion. The tissue is sent for histologic evaluation to ensure that the margins are clear.
