Overview

Chronic cough is defined as a cough that has lasted longer than eight weeks. It can be due to many causes, including lung, gastrointestinal, nasal, or laryngeal issues.

7Common Symptoms

  • Dry cough
  • Throat irritation or tickle
  • Frequent throat clearing or sore throat
  • Hoarseness
  • A runny or stuffy nose
  • Postnasal drip
  • Wheezing and shortness of breath

Diagnosis and Treatment

During your appointment, your doctor will ask about your cough and other symptoms to determine the cause of your cough. In many cases, the cough can be eliminated with the use of specific strategies designed to stop the throat from overreacting.

Medications and, rarely, procedures are sometimes tried.
