Meet a Specialist: Monica Lee, M.D.
Dr. Monica Lee became interested in medicine early in life, after developing an appreciation for biology and life sciences. A community service project at Boston Children’s Hospital further strengthened her interest in the field. “I felt driven to combine my passion for science and reasoning, with the ability to help people,” she recalls. “At that point, I knew I wanted to dedicate myself to medicine and help improve patients’ quality of lives.” Dr. Lee’s decision to pursue otolaryngology came later in life, while attending medical school at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine. “I realized I had an affinity for ENT (ear, nose, and throat) during an anatomy class in medical school. Studying the head and neck regions of the body fascinated me. That made my decision quite simple,” Dr. Lee remembers.
An otolaryngology specialist at Mass. Eye and Ear’s Weymouth and Duxbury offices, Dr. Lee is Board Certified in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. She practices at Mass. Eye and Ear’s locations south of Boston and treats patients with problems ranging from allergy disorders, to chronic ear disease, to head and neck-related issues. “I treat patients of all ages, suffering from a wide variety of ENT issues and disorders,” Dr. Lee explains. Her clinical interests include ear disease and hearing loss, allergy and immunotherapy, sinonasal disease, swallowing disorders, and thyroid/parathyroid disease.
A new member of the Mass. Eye and Ear, South team, Dr. Lee enjoys the challenges that come with diagnosing and treating routine to complicated ear, nose, and throat issues. She shares, “I recently performed surgery on a child suffering from congenital cholesteatoma, a destructive growth in the middle and inner ear.” Dr. Lee was able to discover the growth, bring the girl to surgery, and remove the extensive cholesteatoma in a relatively short period of time. The patient is recovering well. “This has probably been my most challenging case to date,” Dr. Lee remarks.
Dr. Lee’s newest endeavor at Mass. Eye and Ear involves a new allergy clinic, which will open at Mass. Eye and Ear, Quincy during 2013. She is spearheading the new project, along with other Mass. Eye and Ear physicians and staff members. Physicians at the new clinic will have the ability to evaluate patients for current allergies and perform testing for those patients. Dr. Lee adds, “We will not only be able to evaluate patients for allergies, we will be able to administer immunotherapy and other forms of allergy treatment.”
Community outreach for the new allergy clinic at Mass. Eye and Ear, Quincy has already begun. Dr. Lee plans to target prospective patients by spreading the word about the new clinic and its capabilities to current patients. She stresses the importance of raising awareness to those who have not responded to conventional allergy treatment in the past, especially those who are experiencing a major disruption in their daily lives due to allergy problems. Dr. Lee emphasizes, “Our goal is to improve solutions for patients who have been unable to find a suitable treatment plan for allergies in the past.”
Reaching out to primary care physicians and ear, nose, and throat specialists on the South Shore and South East, MA is another part of Dr. Lee’s community outreach plan for Mass. Eye and Ear’s new allergy clinic. Dr. Lee states, “Mass. Eye and Ear, South already has a great relationship with referring physicians in the area. We have a mutual knowledge and trust of each other’s practices. I plan to visit several primary care offices on the South Shore and South East, MA to raise awareness for the clinic, which I hope will build that relationship even further.”
Dr. Lee’s diligent efforts, along with her colleagues at Mass. Eye and Ear, South, suggest the positive outcomes that patients will experience at the new allergy clinic. She concludes, “We are constantly striving to improve our patients’ qualities of lives in all areas. I truly believe our new clinic will help achieve that goal.”
