pH Probe Instruction

pH Probe Contact: Jyoti Ramakrishna   617-726-8705

The diet is not restricted except for avoiding peanut butter. The goal is to have the child eat and drink as usual while pressing the box to indicate when he/she begins to eat and finish. The parent is taught how to use the buttons on the box since it is important to know activity and whether the the child is reclining or not. The use of the box will be reinforced by the pediatric nursing staff.

It is imperative the box is returned to Mass. Eye and Ear the following day. (after 24 hours of data is recorded)

Troubleshooting the lack of readout on the box screen:

  • Check the probe connection at the box to ensure it is snugly inserted
  • If plug is properly inserted and there is no readout, page Dr Ramakrishna at 617-726-2411 pager #20209

Please note: If patient is on Proton pump inhibitor (Prilosec, Prevacid, Omeprazole, Pansoprazole, Lasoprazole, etc.), these are usually stopped 2 weeks prior to proble placement. H2 blockers (Zantac, Tagamet) are stopped 7 days prior to placement.
