Laryngoscopy
- In certain circumstances, the physician may need to view the structures of the upper airway while the child is in the office.
- A small scope with a camera on the end may be placed into your child’s nose and into his upper airway to visualize the structures.
- The scope is flexible and approximately the width of a piece of spaghetti.
- The test is brief and offers the otolaryngologist insight into the cause of many breathing, voice and swallowing problems.
- The office laryngoscopy is usually done on infants or older children.
- The procedure is difficult to perform in toddlers or school aged children due to anxiety related to the procedure.
- If a laryngoscopy is required for a child of this age or a more extensive exam is required, your child will likely be referred for a procedure with sedation in the operating room at a later date. This procedure will be explained later.
