Your Child's First Appointment
To schedule your child's first appointment, please call 617-573-4206. Our Center sees patients all day, each Tuesday, on the 2nd floor of Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
A referral is usually made by your child's pediatrician or another specialist. Because the Center is a collaboration between Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, your child must be registered as a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital as well. You can register your child there by calling 866-211-6588. Please bring a list of your child's medications and any relevant medical testing records to the first appointment.
During your child's initial appointment at the Pediatric Airway, Voice and Swallowing Center, you may spend several hours at the Center in order to accommodate multiple consultations, testing and procedures. It is recommended that you bring toys, snacks, formula, diapers, and anything else your child may need to help occupy the time. There is an activity area and movies available for viewing in the waiting areas.
The nursing staff will first obtain a detailed medical history. Depending on your child's condition, you may consult with specialists from gastroenterology, otolaryngology, pulmonology, speech and language pathology, audiology or radiation during the initial visit. Every attempt will be made to optimize your visit here by allowing time to see the appropriate specialists during your first appointment, though sometimes we need to refer your child to other specialists for further evaluations. These consults will likely occur on a separate occasion. We will do everything we can to coordinate your child's care as efficiently as possible.
