Medical Education and Clinical Research

Research related to sinus and rhinology at Mass. Eye and Ear is focused on two major areas of interest: chronic sinus disease and sense of smell.

Sinus related research topics include:

  • Mechanisms of chronic rhinosinusitis
  • Epithelial immunity
  • Evaluation of new surgical tools and techniques
Related to the sense of smell, researchers are investigating:
  • The physiology and mechanism of olfactory deficits
  • New techniques in odor therapy to treat nerve damage in adults that have lost their sense of smell.

Mass. Eye and Ear offers both a residency and a fellowship program in rhinology and sinus disorders.

Mass. Eye and Ear’s rhinology staff are invited speakers at national and international conferences and participate in a variety of educational courses and seminars of  the American Academy of Otolaryngology.

With Dr. Ralph Metson, the rhinology staff offer an annual course in advanced sinus and rhinology for otolaryngologists.

A free annual forum to educate the public on sinusitis is given during the Fall by the medical staff of the Sinus Center.
