Consultations for Microtia and Aural Atresia
Microtia and Aural Atresia Consultations
Microtia and atresia consultations are typically scheduled for the first Thursday of every month. Please give us a call at 617-573-5524 if you would like to make an appointment.
Many microtia and aural atresia patients come to the Center for the first time as babies or toddlers. Although most are too young for surgical treatment at that time, they come with their families for a full evaluation, to discuss hearing options, to become educated about the condition and to develop a future treatment plan with our multidisciplinary team.
Because many of our patients come from some distance, we try to arrange appointments with all the appropriate members of our team on the same day. Testing usually consists of a hearing test, x-rays of the face and mandible and possibly a CT scan.
For most patients, the initial visit will begin with a comprehensive medical questionnaire, followed by a full examination by one of our facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons. Photographs will be taken, and there will be a discussion of options and the optimal time to begin treatment. Patients are then seen in audiology for hearing testing, followed by a consultation with an otologist. The otologic consultation includes a discussion of treatment options for hearing loss, including hearings aids, speech therapy, and possible surgical treatment.
Surgery to correct or improve genetic deformities may be reimbursed in whole or in part, depending on the insurance carrier. Unfortunately, some carriers deem microtia surgery to be “cosmetic,“ because it changes the external appearance of the ear.
Since most families should have adequate time prior to surgery, we suggest that they start working with their insurance company’s customer service office several months prior to any surgical procedure. Many such offices will ask for a physician’s “Letter of Medical Necessity” which the Center is happy to provide.
