Angiomata

An angioma, also known as “spider angioma,” “cherry angioma,” or “senile angioma,” is a benign tumor consisting of small blood vessels in the skin.  They can occur anywhere on the body in individuals of any age. These respond well to laser treatment(s).

Botox®

Botox®Cosmetic was FDA-approved in 2002 to temporarily remove “frown lines” commonly found across the forehead and between the brows. These injections work by inactivating the nerves which normally stimulate the forehead muscles to contract. When these muscles are in their relaxed state, the wrinkles associated with them temporarily disappear.

Juvederm®

Juvederm™ injectable gel is a smooth dermal filler composed of hyaluronic acid (a natural substance produced under the skin) that has been FDA approved to last up to one year. Juverderm™ corrects wrinkles and folds around the mouth, creating a natural and more youthful appearance.

Hair can be successfully removed using lasers. The laser beam, a concentrated beam of light energy, passes through the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed as heat, damaging the follicle.  There are several types of lasers being used to remove hair.  The type of laser used and response of the treatments depends on a patients’ skin and hair color combination.

Laser Rejuvenation

Laser rejuvenation, where microdermabrasion is combined with lower-dose laser, has been developed and shown to successfully erase many components of aging and sun damaged skin, such as fine wrinkles.  This procedure may also modify  superficial scars and enlarged pores and improve the condition of the skin.

This combination technique is aimed at stimulating and repairing the support tissues in the “damaged” skin.  There is minimal discomfort and/or discoloration following the combination treatments, enabling individuals to return to their daily life without any downtime.  The face, neck, and chest can be successfully treated using this technique.

Lentigines are commonly found on the face and exposed parts of the body in fair skinned individuals.  They tend to increase in number and color with sun exposure later in life. Liver spots,  commonly found on the face, back of hands and forearms have responded well to laser treatments.

Pigmented lesions, sometimes called moles, result from increased brown pigmentation (melanin) in the skin, and often appear later in life.  Because these lesions are potentially malignant, it is important that all pigmented lesions be examined by a dermatologist.  Some pigmented lesions can be removed by  laser.

Following injury or surgery, early scars, often livid and vascular, can be improved by laser treatment using a vascular-specific laser. The best results have been achieved in scars which have been present for less than one year.

Spider Veins/Sclerotherapy

Unsightly small, red, blue or even purple veins called starbursts or spider veins often appear just beneath the skin of calves and thighs as individuals age. Although harmless, most people find them aesthetically unacceptable and seek treatment to remove them. Several techniques have been advocated to remove these vessels such as sclerotherapy. During sclerotherapy, a solution known as sclerosant is injected into affected vessels to permanently shut them down. Patients feel a needle prick and a bit of discomfort as a small amount of sclerosant is injected. Multiple treatments are required to remove these unsightly veins. Although there is minimal down-time, patients need to refrain from exercise, traveling on airplanes, and tanning for a week after each procedure.

Tattoos can be professional, non-professional, single or multi-colored.  Several lasers such as the Q-switched ruby, Q-switched Nd:YAG, Q-switched Alexandrite and carbon dioxide have been shown to effectively remove most blue/black tattoos.  Only certain lasers will remove the colors in some of the tattoos.

These are enlarged blood vessels that are often accompanied by surrounding blotchy redness of the skin.  Broken capillaries are caused by a variety of factors, the most common being over-exposure to the sun.  Vascular-specific lasers can easily remove the majority of these vessels.

Warts

Warts can be treated in many ways ranging from “acid” plasters and drops, to liquid nitrogen and even surgery in some instances.  The pulsed dye laser has been effective in removing warts, especially those which have not responded to these other more conventional treatments.  This laser, unlike its predecessors, does not break the skin thus minimizing pain, the risk of infection, as well as scar formation during the healing process.
