Research Summary

Dr. Liu works to improve understanding of the cell biology of photoreceptor cells and the molecular bases of inherited retinal degenerations to ultimately support the development of rational therapies. Currently, she investigates several known and candidate disease genes for various forms of inherited retinal degenerations and related ciliopathy disorders using a combination of genetically modified animal models and molecular biologic approaches. She works to define how RP1 and TIC21 B participate in photoreceptor biology and studies how mutations in those genes lead to photoreceptor cell death. She also tests potential therapies for RP1 disease, including gene augmentation therapy, in Rp1 mutant mice.
