Research Summary

Dr. Connor studies the role of immunity and inflammation on disease severity and duration in neovascular eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy. His laboratory primarily examines the effect of dietary intake of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, a major lipid in the retina, on AMD disease severity and has found that these nutrients are reasonable therapeutic targets. An additional focus of Dr. Connor's laboratory addresses the role of the complement system, a major component of innate immunity, on retinal vascular development and regression during disease. In the past, he has examined the role of intracellular antioxidants and their modulation of reactive oxygen species in the tumor microenvironment.
