Novel Surgical Approaches

After many years of research, several novel microsurgical techniques have been developed in the recent past that have brought on a 'revolution' to the surgical approach to corneal disorders. The advent of new laser applications to the field of cornea, development of new approaches to lamellar (partial-thickness) procedures to remove and replace the cornea, insertion of devices to reverse or treat thinning disorders, the use of stem cells and non-ocular cells to replace damaged ocular surface tissue, and development of the modern keratoprosthesis (artificial cornea), are just several examples of these new approaches. Mass. Eye and Ear has been a leader in the development and adoption of these new technologies. Through these clinical trials we hope to improve the treatment and care of our patients.
