Corneal Infection and Inflammation

Infection and inflammation of the cornea accounts for a significant amount of visual loss in the U.S. and throughout the world. Researchers at Mass. Eye and Ear are investigating the risk factors and causative mechanisms for infection and inflammation as well as safe and more effective therapies. In addition, several studies are underway, using newest imaging techniques. These imaging techniques help researchers understand the effects of inflammation and treatment by taking pictures of the different layers of the cornea and by seeing inflammatory and immune cells. These studies will give physicians a better idea of what types of treatments are most effective and why. Mass. Eye and Ear has been involved in clinical trials involving novel antibiotics for the cornea and conjunctiva and we have launched several clinical trials for evaluating new anti-inflammatory therapies for the cornea and conjunctiva. Many of these clinical studies stem from research conducted and conceived here at Mass. Eye and Ear.
