About My Research
Dr. Shaye is active in research to optimize the delivery of high quality, cost-effective surgical care in resource-poor settings. He has performed epidemiological research in sub-Saharan Africa examining the geo-spatial distribution of cleft lip and palate deformities in Zimbabwe over a 7-year period. The geographic distribution of patients with cleft lip and palate are used to target and deliver better surgical care. Other research interests include the use of mobile phone technology to improve surgical follow up in countries with significant geographic constraints.
Dr. Shaye's research also focuses on the use of intra-operative imaging to perform less invasive, more accurate repair of maxillofacial trauma injuries. Intra-operative imaging with modern, portable CT scanners offers real-time information on facial fracture alignment and assists in the precise placement of orbital implants. This can obviate the need for more invasive surgery, leading to quicker recovery, less postoperative pain, and less scarring.
