Research Summary

Dr. Sandberg develops electrophysiological and psychophysical techniques, using them to improve the evaluation of patients with suspected or known retinal degenerations, identify disease mechanisms, and test therapeutic interventions. His custom software has permitted automated recording of low-level full-field electroretinograms up to 100 times more sensitive than provided by commercial instruments. His research also involves biostatistical analyses to estimate disease course and identify factors that influence disease expression. Most recently, he has become involved with the treating of murine models of inherited retinal degeneration using gene augmentation therapy, with the goal of completing pre-clinical studies establishing safety and efficacy.
