Dr. Lorenzi is interested in reconstructing the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy with the goal of prevention. She pursues this goal by studying both animal models of diabetic retinopathy and patients with diabetes. Her work focuses on identifying rational targets for adjunct therapy as well as early markers of retinopathy risk to guide the use of adjunct therapy. Current projects include the study of a role of TGF-beta in the retinal capillary damage caused by diabetes, the search for endogenous mechanisms of vascular protection that may be active at early stages of diabetes, and the pilot validation of an early abnormality of retinal vascular reactivity that is a candidate biomarker of retinopathy risk in patients with diabetes.
