Tatjana C. Jakobs, M.D.
Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Department of Ophthalmology
Dr. Jakobs has worked on retinal anatomy and gene expression in single retinal neurons. Now, she is examining neuron structure and function within the context of glaucoma and has found that ganglion cells degenerate in radial, fan-shaped sectors that have the narrowest point at the optic nerve head. She also studies the anatomy of the optic nerve glia in detail, using short-term models of optic nerve damage to study the response of optic nerve glia to injury. A future goal is to better understand the role of optic nerve astrocytes in the progression of glaucoma.
