Human Research Protections Program (HRPP)

The Human Research Protections Program (HRPP) at Massachusetts Eye and Ear has been established to further our mission of excellence in research and to support the Human Studies Committee (HSC), the institutional body that reviews, approves, and monitors research involving human subjects.

As part of our shared commitment to protect the rights and welfare of human research participants, the HRPP provides leadership and education throughout our research community and supports our investigators in their conduct of compliant and ethically sound research.

Human Studies Committee

The Human Studies Committee is the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at Mass. Eye and Ear, reviewing human subjects research conducted at both Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Schepens Eye Research Institute.

Statement of Compliance

Access the HSC 2014 schedule.

Clinical researchers who are engaged in human subjects research as employees or agents of external institutions will be required to enter into an external reliance arrangement through an IRB Authorization Agreement (IAA) between Mass. Eye and Ear and the external institution. If the external institution is a Harvard Catalyst-participating institution, then a cede-review request can be submitted instead of an IAA.

Protocol Submissions

The HSC uses IRBNet for submitting and managing human research protocols.

We strongly encourage new IRBNet users to contact Kaitlyn Utterback at kaitlyn_utterback@meei.harvard.edu for a brief, in-person IRBNet training, particularly if you will be submitting projects or taking action in the system.

IRBNet also provides a Researcher Resources page. Brief instructional videos walk individuals through the five steps of submitting a new project and the subsequent procedures for managing and updating projects. The username / password for all is Mass. Eye and Ear / training.

Learn how to establish a profile in IRBNet.

Application forms are located in IRBNet, under "Forms and Templates."

The HSC Submission Checklist (in IRBNet under "Forms and Templates") should be used for every submission to ensure that the submission is complete and to minimize review delays due to incomplete submissions.
