Study Design

AREDS2 is a Phase III multi-center, masked, randomized clinical trial.

Study Objective
|
To assess the effects of oral supplementation of high doses of macular xanthophylls (lutein and zeaxanthin) and omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (DHA/EPA) as a treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract and moderate vision loss. At Mass. Eye & Ear, we are evaluating this treatment in patients with mild AMD.

Who is Eligible
|
Patients with dry AMD who are at risk of developing exudative (or wet) AMD.

Subject Enrollment
|
This study is currently in follow-up. No new patients can be enrolled.
|

Study Procedures
|
Enrolled patients receive a lutein and zeaxanthin supplement, a DHA/EPA supplement, both supplements, or an inactive or placebo supplement.
