BOSTON (Feb. 28, 2014) -- Martin J. Walsh, the honorable Mayor of Boston, has

declared today Feb. 28, 2014 as “Dr. Joseph B. Nadol, Jr., Day.”  Dr. Nadol, who has served as Chair of the Harvard Medical School Department of Otology and Laryngology and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Chief of Otolaryngology for nearly three decades, is stepping down from these roles to focus on his research and clinical care efforts.

“A visionary with incredible intellect and ambition, Dr. Nadol has made enormous contributions to the department and to the field of Otology. But above all, he is someone who cares deeply for other people and for this institution. His passion for his colleagues, his trainees, and this institution is unrivaled.  The department and his colleagues are indebted to him and in awe of his extraordinary accomplishments,” said John Fernandez, Mass. Eye and Ear President and CEO. "We are pleased that he will remain an important part of the Mass. Eye and Ear community."

The proclamation reads:
Dr. Joseph B. Nadol, Jr., Day

WHEREAS,  Dr. Joseph B. Nadol, Jr., has made tremendous accomplishments in his professional career at Mass. Eye and Ear, both in the medical and surgical practice of otology and neurotology and as a leader in advancing otolaryngology research; and

WHEREAS,  Dr. Nadol, has served as the Chief of the Departments of Otolaryngology at Mass. Eye and Ear, Mass. General, and as Chairman of the Harvard Medical School Department of Otology and Laryngology; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nadol's 27 years as chief and chair, the Department has increased from three to a 52 full-time physicians; and

WHEREAS, under Dr. Nadol's leadership the Department has grown to 40 principal investigators in the largest basic hearing research lab in the world; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nadol co-authored and edited several text books that have helped to educate and mentor hundreds of young physicians and scientists around the world who began their careers under his tutelage; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Nadol's  warmth, sense of humor and thoughtful approach have made a tremendous difference for countless employees, faculty and staff; NOW

THEREFORE, I, Martin J. Walsh, Mayor of the City of Boston, do hereby proclaim Friday, February 28, 2014, as Dr. Joseph B. Nadol, Jr., Day.
