One Mother's Story

Marnie Kaufman drew tears and cheers at our 2008 Founders’ Day Luncheon at The Taj Boston.  A mother of four boys, Marnie was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC), a rare form of head and neck cancer, when her youngest was just one. “My sons were 9, 7, 4 & 1 at the time and all I could think was that I was desperate to live until the youngest would have a memory of me.”

Marnie and her husband, Jeff, were on a quest to find the doctor who could cure her.  After consulting with many hospitals, they met with Dr. Dan Deschler at Mass. Eye and Ear. Marnie knew within a few minutes she had found her doctor. “Not only is he so compassionate and approachable, but he is one of the few surgeons in the U.S. that sees ACC patients regularly and so he knew what to do,” she explains.

Marnie eloquently described her feelings of gratitude to Mass. Eye and Ear and to all those who support its mission by saying, “You all have different reasons for supporting the Infirmary…Whatever you motivation, together you have created an amazing mosaic for an incredible place, which I and thousands of patients each year benefit from.”
