About Your Bill
Why am I receiving two bills for my eye care?
The Beetham Eye Institute (BEI) ophthalmologists have recently become affiliated with Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (Mass. Eye and Ear), which is a licensed hospital. As a result of this affiliation, the ophthalmology practice at One Joslin Place is now designated as a Mass. Eye and Ear hospital outpatient site. When a patient is treated in a hospital outpatient site, the patient receives two separate bills – one bill for the physician services and another for the technical/facility charge. In contrast, when a patient is treated in other practice settings (such as with the BEI previously), the patient may receive a single bill covering all services associated with the visit.
With two separate bills, will the total charge for my eye exam remain the same?
Total patient responsibility for services received in various practice settings depends on the type of insurance the patient carries. The total charge for services received at a hospital outpatient site is often different, and may be greater, than for similar services received in a physician’s office. Whether this impacts your personal out-of pocket payment depends on your specific insurance. If you have questions about your coverage, you should contact the Member Services Department of your health plan.
Will I also receive two separate bills for other diabetes care I receive at One Joslin Place?
No. The affiliation between Mass. Eye and Ear and Joslin relates to ophthalmology services only, so the billing process will only change with respect to ophthalmology services. Who do I make payments to? Payments for bills sent from Mass. Eye and Ear should be paid to Mass. Eye and Ear. Payments for bills sent from your BEI physician should be paid to the physician group. Payment information is included and clearly indicated on each bill.
