Ophthalmology Medical Student Education
Medical student education, administered by Dr. Simmons Lessell, is a priority of the Ophthalmology Department of the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
During the Harvard Medical School (HMS) third-year course in Core Medicine, our faculty teaches a series of required sessions on disorders of the eye and vision. In addition all HMS students attend sessions in the Mass. Eye and Ear Emergency department where they have an opportunity both to observe and evaluate patients with eye emergencies. Students take electives in basic Ophthalmology at Mass. Eye and Ear, usually in their fourth year.
Each student is assigned two mentors from the faculty with whom they work very closely for one month. They also attend the various departmental conferences including Grand Rounds and resident lectures. Student may also chose electives in clinical or basic research under the direct guidance of a faculty member-investigator. The duration is at least one month; preferably longer. The electives are open to qualified medical students from all medical schools and in the course of any academic year there are students not only from around the United States but also from foreign countries.
