Nursing at Mass. Eye and Ear

Nursing expertise is a critical element in a wide variety of settings of Mass. Eye and Ear.

These include the perioperative environment, day surgery, inpatient units as well as outpatient treatment areas. In addition, there are a number of highly specialized treatment areas where nurses are encouraged and expected to become experts in the delivery care, including:

  • The Norman Knight Hyperbaric Medicine Center has three monoplace hyperbaric oxygen chambers and provides care for approved disorders such as osteoradionecrosis, carbon monoxide poisoning, and decompression sickness.
  • The Mass. Eye and Ear Emergency Department treats all manner of emergent eye and ENT issues and is the only 24/7 emergency ophthalmic treatment center in the region.
  • The Morse Laser Center is the site of general laser procedures as well as the development of new treatments for common and rare eye disorders, particularly age-related macular degeneration. The Laser Center is also one of the busiest sites in Boston for refractive surgery.

Nursing management at Mass. Eye and Ear is committed to the empowerment of professional nurses to make clinical decisions related to patient care. This is an organization that values and expects accountability for the process and outcomes of care and insists on continuity of care between clinical caregivers and among clinical settings. Communication and collaboration among healthcare team members is the key to effective and compassionate service along the entire continuum of care.
