Research Interests

Current Research: Our laboratory investigates the role of keratocytes, the resident cells of the eye’s corneal stroma, in the chemokine-driven innate immune responses to viral infection of the cornea. Specifically, we study signal transduction events in response to infection with adenoviruses in cultured human keratocytes and living murine models, at the nucleic acid, protein, and cellular levels, and how those signaling events influence the expression of pro-inflammatory mediators. The mechanisms uncovered in this research represent fundamental and highly conserved means by which tissue stromal cells respond to insult whether due to infection or trauma. Additionally, we have sequenced the genomes of those adenoviruses most commonly associated with the most severe forms of viral eye infection, and discovered a novel gene that may confer corneal tropism. Our long-term goal is to develop new information-based therapies for ocular surface and corneal inflammation due to viral infections and other insults.
