Biographical Profile:

Dr. Frederick Jakobiec is the Director of the David G. Cogan Laboratory of Ophthalmic Pathology at Mass. Eye and Ear, where he also serves as an attending surgeon and pathologist. His clinical and research interests include eye pathology as well as inflammation and tumors of the eye and surrounding tissues, and he has focused much of his career on ophthalmic education.

Dr. Jakobiec received his MD from Harvard Medical School and a DSc from the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University. After interning at Stanford University Medical Center, he completed residencies in both pathology and ophthalmology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. His fellowship in ophthalmic pathology was conducted at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D.C. He is the former Chief of Ophthalmology at Mass. Eye and Ear and Chair of the Harvard Medical School Department of Ophthalmology.

As a clinician, Dr. Jakobiec has advanced cryotherapy for conjunctival melanomas and squamous carcinomas, as well as concentrated on orbital tumors, particularly lymphomas. As Director of the Cogan Laboratory, Dr. Jakobiec continues to enhance eye pathology education in the department by developing visiting professor lecture series and conducting Ophthalmic Pathology Rounds for trainees and faculty from all HMS affiliate institutions. As an Eye Pathology researcher Dr. Jakobiec continues to focus on tumors and inflammations and to publish scientific articles.

Throughout his career, Dr. Jakobiec has focused much of his efforts on ophthalmology education. He has served visiting lectureships and professorships at over 50 institutions and societies, and has been given numerous awards and medals. Since 2007, Dr. Jakobiec has served as Program Director for the HMS/Mass. Eye and Ear Clinical Ophthalmic Pathology Fellowship.

In addition to his exceptional clinical and scientific leadership, Dr. Jakobiec has written almost 400 journal articles and book chapters, and has edited more than 20 volumes devoted to eye tumors and eye pathology. He was the founding Co-Editor of Albert and Jakobiec’s Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology, which is now in its third edition and is considered the gold standard of ophthalmology reference texts.
