Roberto Pineda II, MD

Dr. Pineda is a board-certified ophthalmologist with training in cornea, external disease, refractive surgery, and ocular trauma. At Mass. Eye and Ear, he spends approximately 90 percent of his time seeing patients, and his main areas of focus include refractive surgery, cornea, and cataract surgery. Most of his patients have complex cases and are referred to him after second or third opinions, or re-operations. 

Prior to his role as Director of Refractive Surgery on the Cornea Service at Mass. Eye and Ear, Dr. Pineda was the Division Chief of Ophthalmology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Director of the Anterior Segment Fellowship. He also helped establish and directed the Refractive Surgery Service for Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates. A pioneer in his field, he has brought new techniques and technology to Mass. Eye and Ear and the New England region, including conductive keratoplasty, Intacs with Intralase for keratoconus and DLEK, DSEK, and DALK (novel lamellar corneal transplantation).

The recipient of numerous awards for his work as a physician, he also has garnered praise as an innovator and mentor. To date, he has co-authored four textbooks, published numerous papers, and continues to teach and lecture at national meetings.
