After graduating from Johns Hopkins University with general honors and a BA in Public Health – Natural Sciences, Dr. Song completed his medical training at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He then completed an ophthalmology residency at the Edward S. Harkness Eye Institute of Columbia University Medical Center. Prior to joining Mass. Eye and Ear, Dr. Song completed his glaucoma fellowship at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, University of California at Los Angeles, where he was a Clinical Instructor at both Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center.
As a K12 Scholar in the Harvard Vision Clinical Scientist Development Program, Dr. Song focuses his research on the development and validation of a telemedicine program for glaucoma screening and evaluation. Currently, he is conducting exploratory studies in optic nerve evaluation for glaucomatous features across various imaging modalities with the potential for remote glaucoma screening. In addition, he is conducting a study comparing adjunct visual function tests with the potential to supplement nonmydriatic optic nerve imaging for tele-glaucoma diagnosis.
He has been awarded numerous honors for his research including the Dean’s Award for Research Excellence from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Top Resident Research Presentation in Ophthalmology from the New York Academy of Medicine, a National Eye Institutes Travel Grant for the 2008 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Annual Meeting, and the Mentoring for the Advancement of Physician Scientists Award from the American Glaucoma Society.
