Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology, Skull Base and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery
The objective of this fellowship is to train academic head and neck oncologic surgeons in all areas of oncologic ablative surgery. This includes experience with managing skull base neoplasms, and with head and neck reconstruction by local, regional, and free tissue transfer. The fellowship also provides training hyperbaric medicine.
The fellow actively participates in the work-up and management of head and neck oncologic patients, assisting in major head and neck ablative cases and in all microvascular and skull base cases. Most clinical work takes place at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, with the exception of a weekly multidisciplinary clinic at the Massachusetts General Hospital. A typical work week includes a day and a half of clinic sessions and three and a half days in the operating room.
The fellow participates in a bi-monthly skull base conference and any other relevant conferences or lectures.
Research and Publications:
The fellow is expected to participate in ongoing clinical and basic science initiatives, and will have half a day per week reserved for research efforts.
Most clinical work is performed at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Massachusetts General Hospital. Rotations will include time in the following units:
• MEEI Voice and Speech Lab – Glenn Bunting, M.S.
• MEEI Department of Radiology – Hugh Curtin, M.D.
• MGH Multidisciplinary Head and Neck Oncology Clinic – Lori Wirth, M.D.
Salary and Benefits:
Salary is PGY equivalent with the appropriate benefits supported by the Division of Head and Neck Surgery, the Norman Knight Center for Hyperbaric Medicine, and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
