Community service activities:

Our Department of Anesthesiology tends to be the 'quiet group' in the hospital, but we contribute to the Eye and Ear in ways not easily seen. I wanted to share with you the various volunteer missions that our anesthesiologists have participated in this past year. This activity is supported and encouraged by the department.

1. Dr. Joseph Bayes participated in a medical mission to Ecuador Nov 6-13, 2010 with a group called Medical Mission Nueva. This is a group organized by Dr Gwen Boyd the chief of anesthesia at Callahan Eye Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. Callahan Eye Institute is part of the University of Alabama (UAB) medical system.

Mission Medical Nueva has been going to Ecuador for many years. The group is made up of surgeons, anesthesiologists, anesthesia residents, nurses, and techs mostly from UAB but some staff from the Oshner Clinic (Jefferson, LA), and Univ. of FL (Gainesville, Fl) and Dr. Bayes from MEEI also participate.

The group performs reconstructive surgery (e.g. cleft lip and palate) and eye surgery for indigent children and adults in a small hospital in Baeza (A town about 3 hours southeast of Quito).

2. During the latter part of January and the beginning of February 2010, Dr. Joseph Bayes worked with a group known as 'Friends of ASAPROSAR'. This is a group of ophthalmologists, anesthesiologists, nurses and surgical/medical technicians that have worked in Santa Ana, El Salvador for over two decades. A full range of ophthalmic procedures were performed and over 140 patients were treated during a six day period.

3. At the end of March and beginning of April 2010 Dr. Bil Ragan worked with the group ORBIS in Dalian, China. This particular mission focused upon pediatric ophthalmic procedures including cataracts, glaucoma, oculoplastic repairs, and strabismus repairs. During a two-week period, they treated about 130 patients. This was Dr. Ragan’s seventh medical mission having previously been to Madras, India; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; Accra, Ghana; Capetown, South Africa; Calcutta, India; and Mandalay, Myanmar.

4. In June 2010, Dr. Artem Grush participated in an ORBIS mission in Jakarta, Indonesia. He cared for both adult and pediatric patients suffering from various ophthalmic disorders. He also taught, lectured and instructed anesthesia trainees. Dr. Grush has also participated in several other ORBIS programs.

Other achievements:

We have established a clinical training site for Harvard Dental residents led by Dr. Anthony Sordillo. Dr. Sordillo is also a lecturer at the dental school.

We have increased the number of MGH anesthesiology residents from ten to twelve a year. We have added a BWH anesthesia resident rotation and have eight residents this year.

Sunil Eappen, M.D.
Chief of Anesthesiology
