Meet a Specialist: Dr. Greg Whitman

Dr. WhitmanOtoneurologist Gregory T. Whitman, M.D., a balance specialist, brings 20 years of experience in the diagnosis of dizziness, and gait and balance disorders, to his practice at Mass. Eye and Ear, Balance and Vestibular Center at Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital in Braintree, Mass.

Dr. Whitman attended college at Cornell University and medical school at the University of Connecticut. He completed his residency at Boston City Hospital and Tufts Medical Center. He was a fellow at UCLA for two years and previously served on the faculty of the University of California at Irvine, where he directed the education programs in the Department of Neurology. He is the author of "Dizziness: Why You Feel Dizzy and What Will Help You Feel Better," which will be available in late 2016.

As a board-certified neurologist with a focus on dizziness, vertigo and imbalance, Dr. Whitman stresses the importance of accurately and efficiently diagnosing his patients. “In many instances, providing a medical diagnosis for dizziness can be an extremely difficult and drawn-out process,” Dr. Whitman explains. “The otoneurology clinics at Mass. Eye and Ear focus solely on dizziness, which help simplify and streamline the diagnosis and treatment process.” He continues, “Our approach is to first identify the type of dizziness being experienced by each individual patient. Once a diagnosis has been made, we are able to create an organized, goal-directed treatment plan. As a result, patients begin treatment quickly, which leads to faster and better outcomes.”

Because the sense of balance involves a number of systems in the body, diagnosing the cause of balance disorders can be complex. Dr. Whitman’s combination of training and experience -- subspecialty training and experience in otoneurology, in addition to his interest in education -- makes him particularly well-suited to help patients experiencing dizziness.

The Balance and Vestibular Center at Mass.
