Meet a Specialist: Suzanne Freitag, M.D.

FreitagSuzanne134x202As an ophthalmic plastic surgeon, Dr. Suzanne Freitag understands the importance of interdepartmental collaboration. Many of her patients have complex conditions that require input from several different specialists.

As the Director of the Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Service, she leads a team of specialists who perform a wide range of reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries in and around the eye. She also Co-directs the multidisciplinary Center for Thyroid Eye Disease and Orbital Surgery, which provides minimally invasive, state-of-the-art care for patients with thyroid eye disease and tumors in the eye socket.

Dr. Freitag provides premier care for adults and children with the full spectrum of ophthalmic plastic surgery issues. With subspecialty training in neuro-ophthalmology and orbital surgery, as well as ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery, she specializes in conditions that affect the eye socket, including tumors, thyroid eye disease, and blood vessel abnormalities. She also sees patients with cosmetic concerns.

Many of her patients, especially those with thyroid eye disease and orbital tumors, have complex conditions that require the coordinated care of several highly trained specialists. As a result, Dr. Freitag frequently works with colleagues from other departments, who have expertise in areas such as endoscopic orbital surgery, strabismus, thyroid gland disorders, neurosurgery, and head and neck oncology.

“We continue to expand our multidisciplinary work with other specialists to better serve the comprehensive needs of our patients. This allows us to care for patients with unique and complex conditions, ranging from tumors and fractures to eyelid skin cancer and drooping eyelids,” she said.

Dr. Freitag also leads a support group at Mass. Eye and Ear for patients and caregivers affected by a form of thyroid disease known as Graves’ disease. This free, educational forum is an opportunity for individuals to share information about the disease and to learn more from Mass. Eye and Ear experts, who are performing the latest treatments.

“Dedicating time and space for doctors and patients to come together in a group setting really helps us to provide patients with the best care possible. My colleagues and I can better understand the needs of our patients when they voice their concerns and questions. At the same time, patients are empowered with information that helps them to manage their disease so they can experience the best quality of life.”

Dedicated to excellence in patient care, Dr. Freitag conducts research on diseases of the eye with the goal of improving treatments and technologies, or developing new ones. Her current research focuses on thyroid eye disease and other orbital inflammatory conditions, as well as cancers involving the skin and eye socket. Her work has led to new surgical techniques that are performed through the nose to remove complex tumors behind the eye.

In addition to caring for patients and conducting research, Dr. Freitag also dedicates her time to training ophthalmology residents and serves as the Program Director of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship at Mass. Eye and Ear.
