Meet a Specialist: Suzanne Freitag, MD
When the opportunity arose to join the staff of Mass. Eye and Ear, Suzanne K. Freitag, MD welcomed the chance. “The resources at Mass. Eye and Ear allow me to advance my goals with regard to patient care, clinical research and teaching,” she says.
Dr. Freitag recently joined Mass. Eye and Ear as the Director of the Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Service. “A new institution presents new challenges. I am stepping into a bigger ophthalmic plastic surgery service than at my previous hospital, with more physicians and more patient volume,” she said. “There is a greater need for team work and organization in this setting.”
As she settles into her new role, Dr. Freitag is meeting with colleagues at Mass. Eye and Ear, as well as Massachusetts General Hospital. “We are expanding our multidisciplinary work with other specialists to better serve the comprehensive needs of our patients,” she said. “In addition, we are breathing new life into some patient support groups that have existed in the past and are now back by popular demand.”
As she considers the future, Dr. Freitag looks forward to what she and her new colleagues can accomplish together. “I want to make sure that we continue to deliver state-of-the-art care to our patients by working to develop novel treatments and technology to deal with diseases of the eye area,” she said.
Dr. Freitag treats adults and children with the full spectrum of ophthalmic plastic surgery issues, including diseases of the eyelids, orbit and lacrimal system. She also sees patients with cosmetic concerns.
A graduate of Duke University in North Carolina and Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Dr. Freitag pursued her residency in ophthalmology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. She completed a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and an ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery fellowship at Tufts, Mass. Eye and Ear and Brown. Her current research interests include eyelid malposition, lacrimal system infections and thyroid-related eye disease.
