Meet a Specialist: Michael H. Fattal, M.D.

It was the head and neck component of an anatomy course in medical school that shaped the future for Michael Fattal, M.D. “The complex anatomy and physiology of those different organ systems completely piqued my interest.”

Dr. Fattal credits the residents during medical school who, knowing his interest in otolaryngology, involved him in every aspect of patient care as much as possible. Not many medical students have the opportunity to assist in the repair of complex facial lacerations in the emergency room—an experience he found both terrifying and exciting at the same time!

Dr. Fattal always knew that he wanted to be a surgeon. Prior to medical school however, he had actually envisioned a career in neurosurgery. But it was that one anatomy course that changed his mind and thus began his commitment to the practice of otolaryngology. “I realized that otolaryngology and head and neck surgery is one of the most intimate fields in surgery—it affects how we interact as humans; our ability to see, hear, smell, speak, eat, and breath. It’s those senses that help you get the most out of life.” After those realizations, there was no turning back for Dr. Fattal.

After completing his medical degree at SUNY Update Medical Center, Dr. Fattal completed his internship and residency in Otolaryngology—Head and Neck surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital.
It was that interest in restoring function and improving the quality of life for patients that prompted Dr. Fattal to seek additional training, and thus he completed a fellowship in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Boston Medical Center.

And it’s this rare combination of surgical trainings that aids in his commitment to the practice otolaryngology and the clinical success of his patients. “I enjoy seeing patients of all ages who are experiencing complex problems,” he states. This application of skill combined with a desire to help patients experience life is what makes Dr. Fattal a great addition to Mass. Eye and Ear. As a Massachusetts native, Dr. Fattal always had an interest in returning here to practice. “I feel privileged to work at Mass. Eye and Ear and to be affiliated with such a prestigious institution.”

A new member of the Mass. Eye and Ear, Concord team, Dr. Fattal enjoys the challenges that come with diagnosing and treating complicated ear, nose and throat issues. Dr. Fattal’s clinical practice is comprehensive adult and pediatric otolaryngology, and his clinical interests include head and neck cancer, thyroid surgery, sinus surgery, facial trauma, cosmetic and reconstructive facial surgery of the face.

Mass. Eye and Ear, Concord recently opened a new state-of-the-art facility at 54 Baker Avenue Extension in Concord, offering expanded ear, nose and throat services, including audiology services, to patients west of Boston.
