Meet a Specialist: Oon Tian Tan, M.D., Ph.D.

Oon Tian Tan, M.D., Ph.D., joined Mass. Eye and Ear in June 2010, bringing with her a wealth of experience in a range of dermatological conditions and treatments.

A pioneer in both the development and use of lasers to treat skin diseases and disorders, Dr. Tan is the Director of the new Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Laser Center. “Mass. Eye and Ear has been known for its leading-edge care of the eye, ear, nose, throat, head and neck,” said Dr. Tan. “We are now able to add general dermatology services to the treatment options we provide. Our use of specialized lasers, as well as our close collaboration with the physicians who perform facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, make us unique.”

Dr. Tan utilizes an array of lasers to treat birthmarks including hemangioma, portwine stains and café au lait, as well as other benign cutaneous pigmented lesions, warts, tattoos and scars. “Lasers are a well-established tool for a physician to use when treating a patient,” she said. “We are now finding new ways of using lasers to treat parts of the body – such as inside orifices like the nose – that might otherwise be inaccessible using a conventional surgical tool.”

According to Dr. Tan, the close working relationship between the physicians in the Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Laser Center and the Facial and Cosmetic Surgery Center offers a seamless provision of care. “A patient whose face has been damaged in a car accident, for example, can undergo facial reconstruction and then come to see me for laser treatments of the scars,” Dr. Tan said. “That level of coordinated care is a tremendous benefit we offer our patients.”

As she looks to the future, Dr. Tan is excited by what she sees. “Our patients have access to all the options for care provided by different specialties all housed within one institution,” she said. “I am delighted to be part of such an outstanding multidisciplinary team.”
