Retina
Mass. Eye and Ear is home to the world's first retina service, which was established in 1949 by HMS retinal pioneer and innovator, Charles L. Schepens, MD. Today, specialists in the Retina Service continue to provide exceptional care for patients with diseases of the retina, which include diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (two of the leading causes of vision loss in the U.S. adult population). Our retina specialists also care for eye problems that result from retinal detachment, post cataract complications, and eye trauma. Additionally, specialists in the Service screen and care for intraocular tumors and inherited eye diseases in both children and adults.
